An 18th-century barn has been thoughtfully reworked into a home that feels both timeless and contemporary. The brief was not simply to renovate, but to restore a sense of proportion, calm, and narrative—drawing on the disciplined symmetry of Georgian architecture and the enduring clarity of Roman design.
Reclaimed Rustic Oak Flooring plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the interior with a quiet warmth and understated sense of permanence. Rich in texture and natural variation, the boards ground the space with an authenticity that sits effortlessly alongside the home’s more refined architectural language — balancing rustic character with a restrained and timeless elegance.
In a project defined by careful contrast, the flooring acts as a unifying thread. The reclaimed oak boards—sourced from old agricultural buildings across Europe—bring a rugged authenticity that grounds the interior. Their textured surface and visible age marks create a sense of history without ever feeling sentimental.
What is particularly notable is how the wood flooring is used to shape the space. On the ground floor, the boards are laid in opposing directions to break up the expanse and create a subtle sense of movement. This simple yet thoughtful detail adds balance and visual interest, helping to define the different areas of the open-plan layout without relying on walls or screens.
The decision to leave the oak bare was equally deliberate. Rather than applying a gloss or stain, the designers chose to celebrate the natural grain and texture, allowing the wood to mature and develop a patina over time. The kitchen, painted in a rich burgundy gloss to echo the La Cornue cooker, stands as a striking contrast to the bare oak floor, balancing rusticity with luxury.
The interplay of materials—wood, marble, linen, velvet—creates a layered richness that feels timeless rather than trendy. The home is not about decoration for its own sake, but about creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and deeply personal.
